Author returns to former school to inspire next generation

Poplars Primary School in Lowestoft was proud to welcome back former pupil and local author Paula White, who recently visited to speak with Year 4 pupils about her book Baker by the Sea.

Inspired by the local coastal area, Paula spoke passionately to the children about the importance of sharing stories and preserving the town’s history through writing. During her visit, she provided a fascinating insight into the writing and illustrating process, explaining how a book develops from an initial idea into a finished story.

Pupils were particularly engaged when Paula shared her early design sketches, discussing how illustrations and ideas often change or are removed altogether to better suit the narrative. This behind-the-scenes look helped children understand that writing is a creative process involving drafting, editing and perseverance.

Paula, who attended when it was a middle school from 1983-1986, said: “It really was a pleasure. The children were so well behaved too. So interested and asked some brilliant questions!”

The visit was a powerful and inspiring experience for pupils, who were excited to learn that a successful author once attended their own school. It is hoped the children will be inspired to explore their creativity, ambition and love of reading and storytelling, just like Paula.
