Communication and critical thinking at Trust event

Poplars Primary School hosted a vibrant multi‑school debating and oracy event on 10th February, bringing together pupils from across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Children from 11 schools across Evolution Academy Trust came together in Lowestoft for a full‑day enrichment experience designed to help pupils develop essential communication skills, including critical thinking, vocal confidence, teamwork and the ability to articulate ideas clearly and respectfully.

Throughout the event, pupils took part in four interactive learning stations, each led by a specialist teacher. These workshops focused on different aspects of oracy, from speaking and listening to developing confidence through games, storytelling and structured debate.

The day ended with certificates to celebrate the pupils’ achievements, with four children being awarded medals for being the standout participants in each of the carousel sessions.

Organiser Sam Keeler, Assistant Headteacher at Poplars Primary School, said: “We were delighted to host the inaugural Evolution Academy Trust 'oracy day'. It was entirely focused on the art of effective speaking, and involved children of all ages engaging in a range of speaking and listening activities. It was a thoroughly worthwhile day that all the children enjoyed tremendously.”
