Evolution Academy Trust

National Apprenticeship Week

At Evolution Academy Trust we celebrate the value and positive impact that Apprenticeships have within our schools and to our staff who have chosen this route. It is a fantastic opportunity to grow and build professional skills through structured learning whilst developing the skills required for the role in the school environment.

As part of this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, we have asked one of our Teaching Assistant Apprentices, Phoebe Newrick of Elm Tree Primary School, to share her experience with us:

What inspired you to pursue a teaching assistant apprenticeship?
“I was inspired to pursue a teaching assistant apprenticeship when I started my college placement at Elm Tree Primary School. Being in a school environment helped me realise how much I enjoy working with children and supporting their learning.

“I personally learn best by doing things practically. When the apprenticeship opportunity became available, I felt it was the right choice for me and was excited to get started.”

What does a typical day look like for you?
“My day usually starts by helping pupils at breakfast club. I then read with year one pupils as they arrive at school. After this, I run a 1:1 phonics session and support learning in year one handwriting, English and maths lessons.

“At lunchtime, I enjoy spending time working in EYFS. In the afternoons, I usually support in class-based enquiry sessions. Throughout the day, I also support a pupil with regular interventions such as, speed sounds, colourful semantics, sensory circuits and phonological awareness.”

What have been the most valuable skills you’ve developed so far?
“My apprenticeship has helped me to become more confident and outgoing. My communication skills have improved massively, both in and outside of work.”

Can you share a moment where you felt particularly proud in your role?
“At the beginning of my apprenticeship, I worked closely with a non-verbal pupil. I often sung nursery rhymes to them and one day, the pupil sung a few words back to me. This was the first time I really realised the impact I was having, and it is a moment I will always remember.”

Tell us something you’ve learned about yourself through your apprenticeship.
“During this apprenticeship, I have learnt that there is always something new to learn and that I enjoy learning and developing new skills.”
