Nelson Infant School praised by Ofsted for nurturing and inclusive community

The team at Nelson Infant School in Norwich is thrilled with the publication of its latest Ofsted inspection report, which recognises the school’s dedication to developing children and highlights the strong support it provides to pupils and families across its diverse community.

Inspectors found that pupils enjoy coming to school, feel safe and benefit from positive relationships with staff who "value, appreciate and cherish each pupil". The report also awarded the school a Strong Standard judgment for Personal Development and Wellbeing, recognising the school's extensive work in supporting children both academically and emotionally.

The report praises the school's commitment to inclusion, noting how leaders work tirelessly to remove barriers to learning and ensure all pupils have access to opportunities that help them succeed. Inspectors highlighted the school's free breakfast club, targeted support for families, and its recently opened nursery and specialist provision for children with additional needs.

Inspectors noted that: "Pupils enjoy coming to school. They feel safe because there is always an adult there to listen to their worries." Inspectors also acknowledged the school's caring culture, stating: "Staff get to know pupils and families well. They value, appreciate and cherish each pupil."

The report goes on to praise the strong relationships across the school community, describing "purposeful, happy classrooms" where pupils are inquisitive, respectful and eager to learn.

The inspection highlighted the school's deep understanding of its community and the challenges some families face. Inspectors commended leaders for ensuring personal development and wellbeing are central to school life, with staff providing targeted support and working closely with external agencies to help families access additional assistance where needed.

Particular praise was given to the school's inclusive approach. Inspectors noted that leaders "focus on ensuring that pupils feel safe, included and ready to learn" and that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities are well supported through tailored interventions and specialist provision.

The newly opened nursery was also highlighted as a significant step forward. Inspectors recognised the school's efforts to help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed before starting Reception, while praising the focus on speech, language and communication.

Headteacher Anna Catlin said: "We are delighted that the inspection recognises what makes Nelson Infant School such a special place. Our staff work incredibly hard to ensure every child feels safe, valued and able to achieve their potential. We are especially pleased that inspectors recognised our inclusive approach, our support for families and the positive relationships that sit at the heart of everything we do."

The report also recognised the positive culture among staff, noting there is "high morale" and that wellbeing is a priority for both pupils and employees. As the school looks ahead, leaders remain committed to further strengthening teaching and continuing to develop the nursery provision so that even more children are ready to thrive when they begin school.

This report follows an equally positive inspection outcome for Wensum Junior School, which works together with Nelson Infant as part of Evolution Academy Trust. Matching the results of Nelson, Wensum received ‘expected’ across all categories and ‘strong’ for Personal Development and Wellbeing.
